Statistics Explainer: Why We Need Standard Deviation

In my time teaching as an adjunct lecturer, I incorporated applied statistics into my logic and critical thinking courses. This document is an important guide for students that explains the different kinds of averages, how we measure spread in a dataset, and why standard deviation is needed in addition to a whole host of other concepts. I include this material here because it showcases my ability to explain technical concepts in plain language, in addition to providing insight into how I produce well formatted and edited documents.

An Introduction to Inquiry: Explanation and Confirmation in Process

A custom textbook I developed for my Logic and Critical Thinking courses at Oklahoma State University. The book is a “primer” on inductive reasoning, and is intended as a supplement to deductive logic texts. This text covers the basics of the logic of inquiry, such as: the nature of scientific theories and explanations, the structure of prediction, and confirmation and probability via experimentation. These technical concepts are explained through common-sense, everyday examples. (Note: This is a manuscript copy; the book is currently in peer review and will be typeset soon.)
